Best Video Game Movie and TV Series Adaptations to Watch with Friends

As someone who has played video games all my life, I’ve always looked forward to movie and TV series adaptations. This is simply because I want to see if they can deliver the same level of enjoyment that I got from playing those games, and also to see if they stayed true to their source material. Now, that’s where we always get disappointed because not all adaptations follow the game’s story. I’d be a hypocrite if I said it’s okay because for me, it’s not okay.

However, there are some adaptations that literally exceeded my expectations. So if you’re ever looking for your next TV streaming lineup, I have some pretty solid recommendations that you shouldn’t miss watching. Let’s start!

Sonic the Hedgehog (2020)

As someone who’s followed Sonic since the SEGA days, I was impressed by how well they made this adaptation. Ben Schwartz's voice was seriously the best choice, and of course, the ever-so-great Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik was something else. You'll also see Chaos Emeralds and Green Hill Zone in the movie. I think what I appreciated the most was the studio’s response to feedback by fixing Sonic’s initial design to match the iconic look fans expected. It received a mixed response from fans, but it was a good move for me.

The Last of Us

Alright, so some people might not agree, but The Last of Us is one of the TV series adaptations that I actually consider as one of the best video game adaptations out there. As a fan of the game, I was amazed at how faithfully it brings Joel and Ellie’s story to the screen, especially with the performance of Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey.

It's totally a standout that both gamers and new viewers will really enjoy and appreciate. Right now, you can watch it on several streaming services, including HBO Max, Apple TV, and Amazon Prime.

Mortal Kombat (1995)

Nothing beats Mortal Kombat '95. I wouldn't say it's a perfect movie, but it's something you'd want to watch with your friends over and over again. It's an iconic movie I wouldn't get tired of watching even after so many years. I included this movie because it brings one of my favorite video games to life in a way that's entertaining, true to the source, and not overly to the top. The music, '90s vibe, cast, and other aspects of the film really worked together beautifully.

Silent Hill (2006)

As a horror video game fan, I don't think there's something that can top the first Silent Hill movie in this genre. I used to be so scared playing Silent Hill, but after a while, it became my favorite horror game. The movie, on the other hand, is just literally chilling. The foggy, eerie, and entirely terrifying town was brought to the big screen, feeling like it was straight out of our PlayStation. Some plot points may confuse newcomers, but it's actually a great watch if you've already played the game.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2010)

I used to watch my dad and brother play this game, not knowing I would also play Prince of Persia years later. So when the movie came out, I had to see it. I remember thinking how cool it was to see the Dagger of Time and all the wall-running action. Sure, the story was a bit different from the game, but it still gave me that adventurous feel that I loved. If you played the game and expect that it'll be exactly the same, you'll be disappointed, but if you're after the fantasy-adventure genre in its entirety, you'll enjoy this movie.

Wrapping Up

I won’t lie, there are a lot of disappointing video game movie and TV series adaptations that were released in the past years. However, if you’re really looking for quality adaptations that will awaken your inner gamer self, you won’t be disappointed with these titles I’ve recommended. Do give them a try, and let me know what you think. Enjoy watching!
