**There's something incredibly charming about Obakeidoro 2's art style.** The chibi characters, the monster designs reminiscent of children's stories, and the early 1900s Japanese aesthetic all coalesce into a beautiful mélange of what I can only describe as "pleasantly spooky." It's immediately eye-catching, and indeed it did as we walked past the popular booth at PAX West 2026\. While we waited our turn to play, the extremely personable crew from FREE STYLE gave us the rundown on the game itself and what to expect when you jump into Obakeidoro 2.

[Obakeidoro 2 is a multiplayer symmetrical hide-and-seek game](https://www.nintendo.com/us/store/products/obakeidoro-2-chase-and-seek-switch-2/?srsltid=AU7gw4VaC04alhsNUXmlwAlOnYSZI%5FY3oIxNjT%5F8RkFbtMkRCvAGopxU) not dissimilar to something like Dead by Daylight. Up to 8 players can play at once, with some players donning the monster cowl while the others step into the role of survivor. The coolest part of Obakeidoro 2 is how much freedom it gives you to customize your games. You can divide up the roles in whatever way you see fit: if you want 7 monsters and one human, you can do that. It'll be a massacre, but you can do it if it tickles your fancy. However you want to set up your scares is totally up to you.

Unlike Dead by Daylight, the humans do not have tasks to complete as they evade their would-be killers. Instead, they have to run, hide, and avoid getting caught however they can, utilizing the environment and their magical lanterns. The lanterns have one charge per capture and can temporarily stun the monsters, which, at least in our games, became vital for helping other teammates escape. If you are captured, Obakeidoro 2 takes a page straight out of Mario Kart's Renegade Roundup. You or your teammate will be placed in a cage that's usually in the center of the map. If that happens, it's up to your other surviving humans to make it to the cage, hit the large button on the front, and release those who have been captured, resetting the lantern usage and the monster player's progress.

All of the monsters are adorable renditions of Japanese yōkai, folklore, and urban legends. I immediately recognized the famous visage of Hanako-San, a young girl who haunts restrooms, as she floats around on a small toilet with spectral hands grasping out either side. I played as a Red Demon, based on a Red oni from Japanese folklore, but there were tons of monsters we didn't get to try that all have their roots in Japanese culture. It's not only an interesting way to give your otherwise kid-friendly game some real-world bite, but I think it's a wonderful and creative way to get kids abroad more familiar with a piece of culture that may not be their own. Horror is a great way to introduce people to parts of the world that are familiar enough to be easily understood but different enough to be interesting, and the way Obakeidoro 2 handles its monster design is a fantastic example of this.

One of my favorite aspects of the game is how quickly the games go by. Dead by Daylight is great, but the games can drag on if you have a clueless monster or hesitant survivors. In Obakeidoro 2, the games have a 3-minute time limit, within which everyone must be captured or survive for the round to conclude. Rounds move quickly and seamlessly, with the tight time limit forcing continuous movement and guaranteeing eventful matches. I have a niece and nephew who are pretty young, and I could see myself having a blast sitting down and playing a few games with them in Obakeidoro 2\. I'll have it loaded on my Switch the next time I see them, as it's already out and available on the Nintendo eShop.
