**Imagine a game like God of War or even The Last of Us with the marketing reach of an indie game**, **and you'd have A Plague Tale: Innocence.** The game was a sure-fire hit on paper that went completely unnoticed when it first launched. It had the epic production values, orchestrated score, stunning graphics, and everything you'd expect from a big-budget blockbuster, and yet... no one noticed.

Those who did discover it were treated to a stunning visual and artistic exposition on medieval France during the Black Plague. The subject matter alone was harrowing, yet beautifully presented in world and lore, and it also explored the tragic plight of its cast. This was an emotionally powerful experience not just in its presentation, but also in its game design, which plays off the tragedy and vulnerability of the protagonists in an intuitive way.

2022 brought a sequel, A Plague Tale: Requiem, and the latest game, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, is among the most anticipated releases of 2026\. While the IP may have a stronger media presence now than it did in 2019, the original game is still lightning in a bottle that even its successors can never fully replicate.

### History and Horror

It's easy to complain about the times we live in and reminisce about the "good old days", but as bad things may seem right now, the world used to be a lot worse. The human condition has come a long way, all things considered. These may be distant fables now, but the Inquisition and the Black Plague were among the darkest periods in human history. Although these horrific events brought out the worst in humanity, they also testify to the enduring nature of the species and its triumph even in the most desperate times.

A Plague Tale: Innocence takes some liberties with history by intersecting the Black Plague with the Inquisition as one big bundle of horror. Set in 13th-century France, the story follows the tragic journey of two siblings: Amicia and her much younger brother, Hugo. After tragically losing their family and home, they navigate a disease- and war-stricken France on a journey for survival.

That journey offers an emotionally powerful, captivating story, which for the most part depicts the worst of the human condition, and yet somehow still manages to portray moments of genuine love, kindness, and compassion. It's fascinating how the best of humanity shines brightest in the midst of absolute darkness. As siblings, Amicia and Hugo share a complicated yet unbreakable bond, and along the way they find friendship and companionship in the most unlikely of circumstances. Where, for most of their journey, it feels like the entire world is against them, they somehow manage to stay true to who they are and crawl out of the deepest depths of despair.

Of course, the story isn't just about the main characters, as the game does an incredible job of bringing a bleak medieval European setting to life. It's so detailed and rich that you can't help but feel despair at all the horrors. Whether it is a battlefield of corpses, abandoned villages infested with plague-carrying rats, or depraved army bases containing unspeakable horrors, the game is absolutely unflinching in the themes it explores. There's death, injustice, and violence at nearly every step, and yet there are also moments of beauty and joy. It is in these poignant moments of respite where the characters learn just how powerful hope can be even in the darkest of times.

### A Fragile Hope

As a video game, A Plague Tale: Innocence features strong, compelling game design, proving that video games can be artistic and yet still reward actual gameplay. As a young woman, Amicia cannot bear to endure any offence, so just a single attack means her demise. This initially introduces a stealth-style gameplay experience where getting caught isn't an option and your only weapon is a sling with rocks to pull off precise headshots. The stealth system is quite well designed, and the enemy behavior is sensibly built around it.

While the hide-and-evade style is rewarding and decently varied, the game doesn't get too comfortable in the stealth routine, as both style and variety change substantially throughout the adventure. The change is so significant that the final few chapters hardly resemble the earlier ones. Amicia discovers more uses for her sling thanks to a crafting system and the power of alchemy, which equips her with all sorts of chemical compounds (back in the 13th century it was seen as magic). Along the way, she is joined by allies who each bring new skills to assist with certain obstacles; even the five-year-old Hugo learns a useful thing or two. The core gameplay never stagnates, offering different environmental puzzles and enemy encounters to keep things fresh.

The "stars" of the Black Plague, a constant presence throughout the journey, are those despicable, disease-ridden rats. They are everywhere, as Amicia and her allies have to deal with a literal ocean of rats desperate for flesh. In addition to battling the Inquisition soldiers, Amicia has to deal with the constant looming presence of these ferocious rodents. Fortunately, there are moments when these black rats prove useful in taking out some of the soldiers in creatively gruesome ways.

The death animation you're forced to see when you accidentally fall into a swarm of rats is something no one can ever get used to; it's painful and traumatising each time. As awful as these heinous critters are, the rats play a meaningful role in nearly all aspects of the story: visuals, level design, enemy encounters, and even combat/puzzle mechanics. It's quite an impressive achievement since gimmicks in video games tend to be superficial at best.

Although most artistic/story-driven games compromise on game design conventions, A Plague Tale: Innocence does not fall into that trap; the variety of enemies, tools, upgrades, and weapons never feels lacking. The strategy needed to navigate the various set pieces is always interesting, and there are multiple approaches to solve any situation. Though Amicia must face combat in an almost passive manner (since she can't take a single hit), it's brilliant to see boss battles featured prominently here. Not every chapter has one, but at pivotal moments each boss provides a novel and memorable (not to mention pattern-based) fight for survival, where Amicia must outwit these much more powerful adversaries. The final boss is especially awe-inspiring; dare I say almost Castlevania-grade.

Despite all the rats, bloodshed, and depravity, this is still a stunning-looking game from a graphical and artistic standpoint. It is especially fascinating to learn about historical artefacts and explore medieval architecture, which is presented with great attention to detail. The music is hauntingly beautiful, with Celtic music put to good use to complement sombre moments, triumph, and hope alike. The medieval lore is quite authentic, as the game's plot makes good use of Catholic/Christian mythology without stepping too much into the supernatural.

A Plague Tale: Innocence remains an incredibly confronting experience not just because of its dark themes, but even more so as an action-adventure game which presents unique challenges at every turn. The world is as beautiful as it is depraved, and navigating this haunting, rich setting with vulnerable yet strong-willed characters is a truly rewarding experience. The journey is filled with equal measures of tragic heartbreak and triumph over insurmountable odds.
